How to Build a Home Gym that Fits Your Budget

We recently wrote an article about 5 things to consider when building a home gym, however we left out one very important aspect... BUDGET! This is because we wanted to show you just how easy it is to build your dream fitness space, without having to break the bank!

Below we have pulled together our top home gym fit-outs, at different price points. Each of these set-ups include a variety of equipment, from strength to recovery, demonstrating how you can create a functional home-gym space that meets both your needs AND your budget.

The ‘Bang for Your Buck’ - Budget: $500

When you’re trying to change the shape and size of your body, or even if you're just trying to improve your overall level of health and fitness, then it is CRUCIAL  to continuously challenge yourself. One of the easiest ways to do this is by regularly mixing up your workout routine. Why? Because performing different exercises essentially keeps your body ‘on its toes’, allowing you to target more muscles, recruit more motor neurons, and ultimately, achieve greater results.

If you're working with a smaller budget then it is important to purchase equipment that is extremely versatile. This will allow you to continue performing a wide range of exercises but with fewer pieces of equipment. For this reason, we have chosen the following pieces of equipment for our ‘bang for your buck’ collection.

What’s Included:

Total cost = $532

The Bodyworx flat bench is a favourite of ours. Not only does its compact and stylish design match any fitness space, but it's built in dumbbell rack also adds for extra storage and organisation. In addition to its practicality, this weight bench is great for performing a wide range of upper and lower body movements, including (but not limited to); incline push-ups, tricep dips, bulgarian split squats and hip thrusts.

You can even take these exercises to the next level by grabbing your YBells, which are undoubtedly the most versatile piece of equipment on the market. YBells can be a substitute for dumbbells, kettlebells, push-up stands and double-grip medicine balls, essentially making them 4-pieces of equipment in one!

Made from a non-slip, non-rust material, YBells are built to last. They are extremely easy to transport and store, making them a great addition to gym’s of all shapes and sizes. Now, I’d be here all day listing every exercise you can do with Y-Bells, however, some of our go to exercises include: goblet squats, lunges, shoulder press & kettlebell swings.

Like the Bodyworx weight bench and Y-Bells, the GoFit Ultimate Pro gym can be incorporated into any strength building program. Alternatively, it can be used for more functional and conditioning training. The package includes 10 pieces of compatible equipment, and features a DVD manual with extensive workout inspo. You can achieve 7 different levels of resistance, which is great for all fitness levels. It also comes with a nylon carry bag so you can train anytime, anywhere.

Some specific exercises you can perform with the GoFit Ultimate gym include: bicep curls, inverted rows (when anchored to door), upright rows and banded kickbacks.

And last, but certainly not least, is the Body Iron Ab Slider. There was no question that we needed to include this in our bang for your buck collection. Designed to build muscle strength and density, these sliders will kick your workouts up a notch, especially when performing exercises such as push ups, mountain climbers, reverse lunges, and oblique pikes.

Because this setup will be pushing your body to its limits it's important to incorporate a bit of recovery. The Grey Therapy Foam Roller will help stretch your muscles and tendons post workout, helping to promote blood flow to the muscles. This will speed up the recovery process so that you can get back to your training without feeling overly sore the next day.

Lifters Ultimate Home Gym - Budget: $1000

I think just about every member of the World Fitness fam LOVES lifting weights, and it’s not just because we want to get shredded! Smashing a weights session or hitting a PB leaves us feeling proud and accomplished, which is a great way to boost our mental health and well being!

Strength training also burns excess fat, improves balance, strengthens our bones and promotes better joint health, helping us to be the healthiest and happiest versions of ourselves!

So, whether you’re just starting out or already hooked on strength training, our home lifters home gym has everything you need to smash your goals!

          What's included:

          Total cost = $1017

A barbell, rack, bumper plates and bench are absolutely  E S S E N T I A L when trying to build strength, as this combination of equipment is the best for performing your big compound movements such as squats, dead lifts, bench press, overhead press and barbell rows. These exercises should be incorporated into EVERY strength program, as they allow you to target multiple muscle groups simultaneously. For instance, you may consider a squat just a  ‘leg exercise’, and yes, you will feel this movement predominately in your legs. However, when doing this exercise correctly, your core, lower back, glutes, hamstrings, quads and calves will all be engaged.

The reason we decided to include barbells over dumbbells in this collection is because when you are performing compound movements (or any exercise for that matter) you can generally lift much heavier loads with the barbell. Lifting more weight is one of the most effective ways to increase your overall strength and muscle mass, and doing so will help you achieve a strong and toned physique.

Our barbell of choice for our lifters home gym is the Body Iron 7ft Olympic Barbell, due to its compatibility and adaptability. Not only does it fit the majority of standard racks and weight plates on the market, but its small diameter and high-grade chrome finish makes gripping the barbell easy for everyone. It can  also take on an additional 318kg, so you can be sure to keep getting those gains throughout your entire fitness journey!

Pair this barbell with the Body Iron Bumper Plates and your all systems go! Built with high-quality rubber, these weight plates are made to last. They are designed to be dropped from above head-height so you can confidently lift heavier weights without worrying about injuring yourself or damaging your equipment.

The Body Iron Squat Rack is another fantastic piece of equipment to assist with your compound movements. It has over 30 adjustable positions to accommodate every each and every user, as well as standard sizing to easily fit into a smaller gym space. This squat rack also comes fitted with 8cm safety hooks and a wide frame for extra stability and support whilst lifting those heavy weights.

And lastly, no strength collection would be complete without the Next Fitness Utility Bench. Offering 8 levels of incline adjustment, this weight bench helps to create dynamic workouts whilst keeping your training fresh and progressive. By being able to work your body at different angles you will be able to achieve a well-rounded and effective training session that enables you to target multiple muscle groups with  one single piece of equipment.
